"Marichu officially opens Family Day activity 2010"

"In Kaibigan, it’s not just helping our children to go to school or hone their giftedness in sports, theater, choir and visual arts. Women from the six community-partners namely Baseco, Malate, Onyx, Pasigline, Topacio and Tejeron also benefited from the trainings, workshops and meetings organized by the Foundation as part of community organizing. These activities facilitated empowerment among us; it opened up our eyes that women are not just meant for domestic chores; women are also capable to change their condition. This belief not only to helps us as individuals but it also gives us opportunity to be of service to others, especially our neighbors who are poor like us”
Every mother wants assurance for their children’s better future, I am not different from them. I was once a mother whose world revolves around the house, and often asks question if I could have the capacity to send my children to school and to put them until college and to give them a better future. 2006 when we became a part of KEOFI, Ferdie, my son, was accepted as the Foundation’s beneficiary. I was so happy because I would have a firm partner to shoulder my son’s school needs – they gave Ferdie school supplies, uniforms and even financial support for his school projects. |
It was also this year when I became a Community Leader, this paved the way for me to know more about Kaibigan Foundation. KEOFI is not just a shallow organization, they not just give educational assistance to poor children, but they also have other programs and services on Health, Livelihood and Children’s Development that discovers the giftedness of children from singing, dancing, acting, sports and visual arts.
They also have other programs that would improve the physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional status of their beneficiaries. These programs are not applicable only to children, but also to us, community leaders and parents. These activities are Sports \ Family Day, Health Services such as Medical Mission, Free Check-up, Seminars on Health Awareness and Reproductive Health.
Aside from recreational and health activities, we are having livelihood activities like making bags, belts, crochets and placemats. We also have trainings on social enterprising and savings that would truly prepare us in the foundation of business someday.
With KEOFI, its more than just “our children” I mean, even us mothers benefited from the trainings or seminars like personality development, leadership training, VAWC (Violence Against Women and Children, Adolescence Sexuality and Reproductive Health and many more that enable to open my eyes that women are not just for domesticity – that we should also contribute to have a better community, society and that we, as women, are endowed with knowledge and skills that could change my life and the lives of people around me.
I am a living testimony of the change that is brought about by the efforts initiated by the Kaibigan Foundation. Coming from a rocky and turbulent marriage, I have a low self esteem, I feel that I don’t have time to care and be of service to others because I was more concerned on my personal problems. I was slowly being eaten up by self-pity and bitterness, thus many perceive me as snob and selfish.
However, when my son became a beneficiary of the organization and in effect I became a member of the organization too, I also underwent different trainings, sessions, orientations and workshops that greatly helped pull me out of my brooding self. Activities for us parents of beneficiaries helped me regain my confidence, gave me the capacity to deal with different types of people in the community and broadened my knowledge and helped me realize that despite my past, I can still stand up and re-build my self-worth and that despite my own problem, I can still do service to others. My only concern before was confined within the home, what we will eat and how we will survive, now, because I am more aware and capacitated – as a person and as a leader—I am confident to fight for what is right under the law; push for political changes in the community, report and involve myself in sensitive family and children’s concern.
Also, KEOFI taught us the concept of community organizing wherein shared leadership and decision-making are now being exercised. Moreover, solving the problems identified in the community are our collective responsibilities.
Now, I am more pleased because I know that KEOFI is my partner in shaping not only the mind and heart of my son but also the sons and daughters of different families in various communities here in the 5th district of Manila.
I know that thru the organizing efforts of the Organization, we, as members of the different communities, will be able to come together and work towards the solution of our perceived needs and problems. I know that thru our collective efforts, we will become not just mere receivers of charities but partners towards change. We are now confident to stand up and hand-in-hand work towards changing our situations.
